Lander University juniors Macy Gault and Lexi Sterling have been accepted into the South Carolina Washington Semester Internship Program for the fall of 2021.
The prestigious program gives students firsthand experience in the nation s political process, providing opportunities to work with senators, representatives and congressional staffers. During their semester in Washington, Gault and Sterling will live with other interns in apartment-style student housing that is located in the heart of Capitol Hill.
Lillian Craton, director of Landerâs Honors College and professor of English, mentored both students and said, âThese two young women have remarkable intellect and professionalism. Iâm so proud to have them representing Lander in the nationâs capitol.â
The community is invited to attend a live, virtual roundtable discussion with Lander University political science faculty Matthew Malone, Lucas McMillan, Kimberly Richburg and Ashley Woodiwiss at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
The session, titled âPost Inauguration Day Analysis,â is the first of a series of events to be hosted by Landerâs College of Behavioral and Social Sciences this semester, as part of the South Carolina Humanities Electoral Initiative.
Lander is one of four South Carolina universities presenting virtual programs in this initiative. In addition to election analysis at the national and state levels, panelists will discuss the roles of women in politics, crisis management in a time of polarization and the view of the United States from abroad.
