The 2021 Fairfield PaintOut ended Saturday with an awards presentation to participating artists, who submitted approximately 225 works this year for the Premier Show and Sale on Friday. PaintOut Committee Member Melinda States say the sale brought in $17,185, a new record for the event. Saturday's award winners included Larry Siwek for Hometown Pride; Troy Tatlock for the Best of Show; Marty Coulter, Spencer Meagher, and Susan Rodgers the Awards of Excellence; Coulter Artists' Choice; Vicki Gifford People's Choice; and Fran Mangino won the Tuesday Quick Paint. The Jurist for the event was Roy Boswell. The Albion City Council will meet tonight at 7 at City Hall. In old business, votes are likely on the auditor's report, a fairgrounds water adjustment, and trick or treating. After department, ward, and city reports, the council will move to new business. Richie Fulkerson will begin his tenure as Fairfield Chief of Police on July 12th, after he was appointed to the position and approved by the City Council Tuesday night. He says he has nearly 30 years of experience with Illinois State Police that will help him run a smaller city force, and, though the budget will be smaller, he says Fairfield is well-equipped. Several Fairfield FFA members were honored at an awards ceremony at SIU Friday as part of the District 5 State FFA Convention. Sara McGehee received her State Winner plaque for the second straight year in the FFA State Agri-Science Fair in Environmental Systems. Nine chapter members also received their State FFA Degrees this year. The Wayne County Board will meet tonight at 7 in the upstairs courtroom of the Wayne County Courthouse. Illinois State Police say 18-year-old Fairfield resident Alexis Sargent was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Clay City Friday afternoon. Preliminary investigative details indicate she was northbound on South Main Street at U.S. 50 when she failed to stop at a stop sign. She was then struck by an eastbound car, driven by 53-year-old Olney resident William Goluba. Goluba and a passenger in Sargent’s car, a 14-year-old male from Fairfield, were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sargent was also taken to an area hospital, where she passed away. The Greater Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce has announced Zurliene Enterprises as the 2021 Business of the Year. A three-generation family-owned-and-operated business in the farming sector, Zurliene Enterprises has served Wayne and surrounding counties for over 50 years. They will be honored at the annual Chamber Dinner, and more information on the dinner date will be announced in the future.

The Edwards County School District will conduct a pre-school round-up next month for children up to five years old who will not be eligible for kindergarten next year. For students in the Albion attendance area, the screening will be held on March 8 th from 8:30 to 2:30 at the First Christian Church.
