Every year, more home-bound seniors are becoming “food insecure,” which means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from or they don’t have enough money to cover groceries for the month.
To help fill that gap, Meals on Wheels San Diego County offers low-price meals for seniors that are packed and home-delivered by an army of volunteers that includes Allan Thomas of Carlsbad.
The retired 68-year-old welder spends two and sometimes three days a week delivering meals to nearly 40 clients, and frequently helps out by doing free handyman tasks around their homes.
Charlotte Fan, a North County district supervisor for Meals on Wheels, said she can always count on Thomas to pick up an extra shift when needed.
