There was a mega flood in 2018, followed by another later next year. Then came the regional health scare, the Nipah outbreak.
But over the years since its emergence as a globally acclaimed village destination, Kumarakom has not witnessed anything remotely like the impact of COVID-19. And just when it was bouncing back from the impact of the pandemic-induced lockdown last year, the second wave of the pandemic has dealt a body blow to the tourism business in the destination.

As the tourism sector in Kottayam gradually rebounds from the pandemic-induced slump, the villages on its high ranges are preparing to roll out the welcome mats to the guests.
According to officials, as many as 20 villages located along the rolling tropical hills of Kottayam such as Manimala, Kanjirappally and Erumeli etc. will soon come up with a host of tourism products and services that are cent percent locally owned. As part of it, the Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission Kerala has launched efforts to develop the destination code of conduct for these villages so as to include them in its experiential tourism circuits.

‘It could help those rendered unemployed by the pandemic’ Homestead farming combined with tourism could hold the future for Kerala’s tourism and labour sectors, both of which have been severely affected by the pandemic situation.
Anyone having land ranging from five cents to even 25 acres could opt for homestead farming, a combination of homestay and farming, without spending much on augmenting amenities to host visitors. It would be apt for people interested in agriculture with cultivable land around their house, said Jose Dominic, co-founder and former CEO of CGH Earth.

The MoU was exchanged by Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran and his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Usha Thakur
Madhya Pradesh signed a memorandum of understanding with Kerala for replicating the latter’s pioneering Responsible Tourism (RT) initiative.
The States signed a joint declaration under which Kerala will extend a series of services under a 16-point programme. The MoU was exchanged by Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran and his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Usha Thakur.
