True reconciliation possible if Uhuru makes huge sacrifices

THE STANDARD OPINION President Uhuru Kenyatta. [Courtesy] President Uhuru Kenyatta has on several occasions said he wants to leave a united Kenya. In some way, I read this commitment as his heartfelt legacy project, yet it is poorly articulated and implemented. The Big Four Agenda could be in his priorities, but surely, it is not what comes out, especially in his off-the-cuff speeches. Of the Big Four Agenda, infrastructure stands out. On this, his government has realised tangible results, not just in major towns, but even in rural feeder roads. What struck me during the Madaraka Day celebrations was Uhuru’s constrained ability to break the chains of past historical injustices committed against the lakeside people including, ironically, the unfortunate events between Jomo Kenyatta and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

Uhuru Kenyatta should be forceful in leaving behind his legacy

National government must care for the interest of all

THE STANDARD OPINION President Uhuru Kenyatta today chairing a Cabinet Meeting at State House, Nairobi. [Courtesy] Resource distribution in this country is at the absolute discretion of who runs the National Government. Governors and Parliament, who should have a say, play a secondary role from the look of the ongoing political realignments. Consequently, it seems, whoever wants development in their area should negotiate with prospective State House occupants.  This raises several questions. Is it constitutionally right that every tribe or region should stand up to fight for its interests at the national level? Or perhaps this is a moral question. So, on what moral basis does a group of honourable members stand in public to demand a share of government post 2022 General Election in the would-be winner regime?
