Fairfax prize for Lifetime Achievement in fiction, and tonight were giving away the Mary Roberts Rinehart award for a woman who writes in nonfiction. The goal in creating the award was to try to focus attention on works that were important. Addon writers whose works are important. And to bring riders and readers together. So this is celebratory but also very much part and parcel of what the festival is about. Eula biss who teaches at northwestern has won numerous other awards, called sandburg literary awards, the jackson writers award, and nonfiction prize, a National Book creating circle award. Hello, everyone. Welcome to the early sunday morning to the brooklyn book festival being hosted here at Brooklyn Law School. Our dean nick allard is here to welcome you. That dean has been a really wonder for bridge between the law school in brooklyn and the brooklyn book festival. Its on like to introduce nick allard to you all. [applause] thank you, professor. Well, welcome to all of you. Were so proud to be able to host part of the largest free letter very festival in new york city in one of the largest in the United States. It certainly is the hippest and most diverse book festival. So weve got that working for us. Also, welcome to the best law school in brooklyn. Some of you know were the only law school in brooklyn. [laughter] but, you know, we are the best law school in the largest and most vibrant borough in the greatest city in the leading state in the most wonderful country. So we have that working force. Meetings were supposed to be secret but there were still some leaks coming out. It was march 7th when the archbishop of buenos aries got up to speak. He said there are four or five things that are needed in the church right now. Spoke with his normal, humble small voice. And he said, the first thing is we need a church that proclaims j joy. Were in a lot of sadness and cries and we need the message of joy. We need a church thats not afraid to go out. He said when the church is stuck inside herself, shes like a smelly room, a woman thats bent over in the scriptures and she cant get up. And cardinal broggolio says sometimes we catholics think we see jesus at the door knocking and trying to get in and were the ones who are supposed to open it. Sometimes jesus is the one inside and we need to let him out. Joy, the new hope should be a minister and bringer of joy. I can tell you when many cardinals came out of that friday session, i saw them later in the evening. How did the meetings go . W
