Experts suggested Ramaphosa must appoint a nonpartisan individual to head the SSA, who will run it professionally and restore its lost dignity.

President Cyril Ramaphosa must overhaul the state security setup or risk a fallout worse than the recent failed “insurrection”. Various organisations, experts and political leaders have questioned Ramaphosa’s failure to implement the recommendations of the Mufamadi high level panel which probed shenanigans at the State Security Agency (SSA). The SSA is currently headed by Gab Msimanga. The panel, chaired by Dr Sydney Mufamadi, found that under former President Jacob Zuma, the SSA was turned into political tool to fight his factional battles within the ANC. A special “rogue unit” was established and dedicated to taking care of his personal needs..
State Security Deputy Minister Zizi Kodwa talked King Shaka and the Battle of Isandlwana to underscore the need for everyone to protect intelligence services. But EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi blew that out of the water the SSA was so dysfunctional they couldn’t perform their constitutional responsibilities.

South Africaâs state security minister said sheâs making headway in turning around the nationâs dysfunctional spy agency in the face of fierce opposition from some of its staff.
The agency tasked with monitoring threats to national stability is being overhauled to try and address management deficiencies and repair deep divisions that arose over almost a decade, Ayanda Dlodlo said in an interview last week. Steps are being taken to end the routine flouting of compliance procedures and reduce a senior-post vacancy rate that reached as high as 60%, she said.
Since being named state security minister in 2019, Ayanda Dlodlo said her adversaries have spread rumours she’s a gambling addict and is married to a Central Intelligence Agency operative
She also says a false impression had been created that she was allied to former President Jacob Zuma, whose nine-year rule saw the intelligence services drawn into factional battles within the ruling ANC
Dlodlo says she is appointing competent people to the SSA in a bid to root out its problems, she has however faced accusations at the Zondo Commission of appointing 26 managers without proper approval
