UNC-Chapel Hill hired one of the country s biggest law firms in 2014 to defend its affirmative action admissions policy. The university lost a U.S. Supreme Court case over the policy, an effort that cost UNC at least $24.5 million. More costs could come.

The General Alumni Association's next president, Veronica Flaspoehler, will assume office on July 17. Flaspoeher graduated from UNC in 2008 as a first-generation college student. She has been involved in volunteer work with the GAA since graduating. “It all came to be through my volunteer activities that I found this new passion and this love that I had for Carolina that I didn’t know as a student,” she said.
