reporter: and desperately looking for others still unaccounted for. mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. what a harrowing situation and speaking of tough weather, let s take a look at today s weather. it s going to be another doozy. a day of severe storms across much of texas and the lower midwest. along the gulf coast and into florida. those storms could pack damaging winds, hail, even tornadoes. a few showers for the northeast and pennsylvania. and snow for parts of the northern rockies. temperatures will be slightly below normal across most of the nation in the 50s and 60s, 70s in the south. 80s in the southwest and 93 in miami. well, they had brilliant sunshine in the key west florida, of course for the end of its annual independence day celebration. perfect conditions for the 32nd bed race. yeah, there it is. the teams had four people pushing a highly decorated and fully functional bed down a street. so then one person who is obviously the lucky one gets to ride on eac
the eastern seaboard that are at risk for major earthquakes. boston, new york city, charleston, south carolina. reporter: it s not just california. the most dangerous zone is in the middle of the country, in the lower midwest. the last big one here was in 1895 and when, not if, when, it happens again, there would be millions left homeless and billions in damages. it s like a hard, cold slab that allows energy to travel very efficiently. in california the rocks are relatively hot, shattered and energy dissipates quicker. reporter: gary patterson is a geologist in memphis and he showed us old buildings across his city that he says would never make it. they were built long before current codes with old brick masonry. school buildings, police and fire departments.
this storm? we are looking at tropical storm colin right now. right here in the center of your screen, it s not much to look at and it is barably a tropical storm. the threshold is 40 miles an hour. here s the path and the intensity expected over the next several days, staying as a tropical storm and staying away from major land masses right on through sunday. beyond sunday, it s a little too early to make the call as to what this storm s going to do, but it s going to have a hard time staying together over the next few days. the main land, this is where we re going to deal with some heat. that s the other big story here, triple digits and 90s will be common, still not expecting any heat, we continue to bake throughout much of the south and the lower midwest. not much relief it looks like until we get into thursday and friday. and even then, it s mainly just for the northern locations while spots in the south continue to sizzle. we ll just crank up those air
