A reckless punter was lucky to escape without a scratch after running into the middle of the home straight during a race in a bizarre incident at Trentham in New Zealand on Saturday.
Only sensational horsemanship from wary jockeys and a fair share of good fortune protected the unruly spectator from causing serious harm to himself, the riders and horses involved.
The punter ran onto the track at the 100m mark as runners went for home with jockeys forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
His stupidity was cemented when he raised his hands in celebration after the field had passed him by.
A punter jumped over the fence and onto the track mid-race, causing the jockeys to swerve their horses around him at Wellington Cup Day. A police spokeswoman confirmed the man was arrested and charged with criminal nuisance, in doing an act endangering public safety and is due to appear in the Lower Hutt District Court on Thursday. No-one was injured in the incident.
