Support groups: Lower Cape Fear LifeCare offers grief care programs

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare will offer a multi-week, free virtual grief care program for those coping with the death of a spouse or partner on Wednesdays, March 10, 17, 24, 31.  The group will be held 12-1:30 p.m. in a secure virtual environment. Registration is required; to register, please call 1-800-379-4880 and a grief counselor will contact you. Most of us have loved and lost special people in our lives and LCFL understand that coping with grief is a challenging process. If you or your friends and family are having difficulty dealing with the loss of a loved one, Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (formerly Lower Cape Fear Hospice) is here to help. Cheryl Ann Slowik Cheryl Ann Slowik, 74, otherwise known as “Mi Mi,” made her final journey home to be with Jesus Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021. Cheryl was born June 14, 1946, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Mary and Francis Duckett. She spent the early part of her life in Fall River and eventually resided along the coast at Westport, Massachusetts, where she met and fell in love with her adoring husband of 28 years, Thomas Slowik. Cheryl retired from Massachusetts Rehabilitation Center after 30 rewarding years of service. She loved to make people laugh and to bring special people in her life joy through the most thoughtful of gifts. There was never any animal or baby that Cheryl did not adore. Her world especially revolved around her two grandchildren, Peyton and Bryson Furtado. From the times of their births, Mi Mi repeatedly reminded them they were loved, “to the moon and back, a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck!”

Phyllis Ann Bowers Dunn HAMPSTEAD Phyllis Ann Bowers Dunn, 80, formerly of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, joined her savior Jesus Christ Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, after a six-month, courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 2, 1940, in Bristol, Tennessee, and has rejoined her loved ones; parents, Floyd (Dock) and Ruth Callahan; brother, Donald Callahan and living wife, Nancy; dear beloved son, Steven Dale Bowers; and late husband, Tony Dale Bowers, father to her children. Also, Phyllis’s husband of 42 years, Franklin Arthur Dunn, who preceded her in death by a mere few weeks. Michael Corbett Stovall Jr. WILMINGTON Michael Corbett Stovall Jr., 69, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2021, surrounded by family at Brookdale Memory Care center in Wilmington. Michael was the son of Mary Bellamy Koonce and Michael Corbett Stovall, both of Wilmington; grandson of Nora Meade Corbett Stovall and Major Harry Wylie Stovall and Lillian Maxwell Bellamy and The Honorable Emmett Hargrove Bellamy, and the husband of Kathleen Lester Stovall, formerly of Reidsville. He had two sons, Michael Corbett Stovall III of Brooklyn, New York, and Christopher Talley Stovall of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born Aug. 7, 1951, in Houston, Michael was a go-getter as a child. He enjoyed playing catcher for his Little League team, coached by his father. In addition to backing up pitchers, he won “Most Typical Cowboy” and was able to meet Roy Rogers as a result.
