The Eureka Springs Community Center is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 24.
Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the community centers Earth Day Celebration also marks the opening of the Old School Park. The event starts at 11:05 a.m. with opening remarks from Mayor Butch Berry, followed by a performance by John Two-Hawks at 11:15 a.m. and playing in the soil at the Old School Park at 11:30 a.m. Community center activities director Cat Luna encouraged those who would like to participate in planting at the Old School Park to bring their own gloves.
Its expensive to get the team started, Miller said, because each student needs a bike, safety equipment and insurance coverage. Theres a fee to register for races, Miller said, and inexpensive bikes cost $800 to $1,200 each.
If we can get some good bikes to start with, hopefully next year it wont be quite so expensive and we can just build on it, Miller said.
Miller said the club also could use help from volunteers, especially parents who would like to ride with their children. She said the club will host an event at the Great Passion Play on Saturday, May 1, where everyone will learn about bike safety and get a chance to take on the trails.

Angie Shaw never expected to become the CEO of Eureka Springs Hospital when she started working there in 2007 as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Something shes learned over the years, Shaw said, is to roll with the punches and embrace the unexpected.
I figured I was going to be a nurse in the ER and go about my life that way, Shaw said. I feel theres a divine power up there that tends to lead us in one path before we even realize it, so here I am.
