The program originally began in 2020 as the pandemic gripped the world. At the time, a local hotel that had an excess of frozen scrambled eggs donated them to the Community Kitchen to the Community Kitchen, according to information provided by Alistair MacDonald, who has been part of the program since its inception. Jim Webb, pastor of the Presbyterian church who also had catering experience, offered to help the kitchen out and gather church volunteers to use the eggs to make burritos at the church that they would then donate back to the kitchen to serve.
“It seems like there are a lot more folks who are finding themselves in moments of need. . There seems to be a strong connection between inflation and when we really started seeing the numbers kick up.”
Through the fundraiser, residents can pay $50 to receive a personalized Valentine’s Day post card which will be mailed to them and a heart that will be created by Community Kitchen volunteers and hung in the dining room with their loved one’s name, according to a release from the kitchen; all proceeds from the campaign will go towards purchasing more food and supplies so the kitchen can "keep providing essential services to the community at large."
