A nominee in this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar category,
Love And Monsters is an unheralded treat. Michael Matthews’ enjoyable romp comes from no previous existing IP, features no A-list talent and comes with a modest price tag, but rises above the pack through smarts, invention and a neatly judged tone. Denied a cinema release by Covid (the plot has echoes of the pandemic, with a whole world frightened to go outside), it’s a crying shame, as its imagery merits the big screen and its sense of adventure deserves a full house.
The premise is laid out in voiceover and nifty illustrated sketches. To prevent giant asteroid Agatha 616 from destroying the Earth, scientists devised a series of rockets that blew the rock to smithereens. The downside is that the chemical compounds employed to launch the missiles fell back down to Earth and turned the animal kingdom into the kind of mutant monsters beloved by Ray Harryhausen (why it didn’t affect humans is never addressed). The Oscars will air April 25, 2021, at 8 p.m. EDT. If you want to stream them, and the movies that are nominated, you have your work cut out for you – but why would you bother? The Oscars are just a bunch of malarky, right?
Well, sorta. They’re definitely not a real “award show,” as in the movie that wins “Best Picture” is rarely the best film to come out that year (and if it is, it’s a coincidence). Instead, the ceremony is an advertisement for the movie industry. Movies about movies (This year: “Mank”) or movies that cover a timely issue (This year: “The Trial of the Chicago 7” has obvious parallels to the biggest news stories of 2020) have a huge advantage.

The 93rd Oscar nominations have finally been announced, recognizing films released during a year where movie theaters were largely closed. If you’re looking to catch up on all of the nominees, we’ve compiled a list of every film that was nominated for an Academy Award this year and where to stream them.
Competing for best picture are “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” “The Father” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The Oscars will be broadcast live on April 25 on ABC. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the only people who will be allowed to attend the event will be the nominees, their guests and the ceremony’s presenters.

Way back when in early 2020, Hollywood––and everyone else––was enjoying its pre-pandemic innocence.
Early 2020 was an exciting entertainment awards season with the Golden Globes kicking things off on January 5th; then came the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA) on January 9th; The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Jan 19th; The 62nd Grammy Awards on January 26th; and ultimately, the awards season big finale: The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony on February 9th. Things were certainly good in the ‘Wood back then, but what we didn’t know at the time is that the 2020 Oscars would be one of the country’s last major entertainment events before lockdown began.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body which oversees the Oscars, released the early contenders for the so-called below-the-line categories.
Mank, David Fincher’s black-and-white ode to old Hollywood, was included on the lists for makeup and hairstyling, original score and visual effects.
