A motion to build a fence along portions of the Lourens River, among other measures to combat the issue of vagrancy and alleged prostitution along the certain parts of its banks in Somerset West, was submitted by councillor Carin Brynard of the Cape Independence Party (Capexit) to include on the Subcouncil 8 agenda on Thursday 22 February. It seeks to address “problem areas” at the bridge in Main Road, Andries Pretorius Street and Island Park.

Experienced gardener Temba Cimilanga (54), originally from the Eastern Cape, is leading a team of six on a search-and-rescue mission to collect plants from the banks of the Lourens River as part of the City’s flood-alleviation project.
An artist from Somerset West who has been painting with watercolour for almost 40 years, with nature and scenery his favourite subjects, is using his skills with the brush to assist the Lourens River Conservation Society with raising funds.
