LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) Victor “Vic” Stelly, a former Louisiana lawmaker who served 16 years in the state House and later as a member of Louisiana’s higher education policy board, has died. He was 79.
Fifteen hours after Victor s passing, his wife Terry Stelly passed away as well, according to KPLC-TV.
Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed Stelly’s death in a tweet Saturday. He did not say how or when Stelly died.
“Vic served dutifully,” Edwards tweeted of the former Lake Charles lawmaker.
Those close to Vic and Terry Stelly described them as âinseparable.â
On Saturday, they werenât apart for long when Vic, a 79-year-old former state representative, died of complications from COVID-19 early in the morning and Terry, 80, succumbed to her own battle with the virus just over 13 hours later.
The couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
âYou donât see marriages like that too often anymore,â said state Sen. Ronnie Johns, R-Sulphur, who had been friends with the couple since the 1980s. âAt first it shocked me that they both died the same day, but as I looked back at how they lived their lives and how they felt about each other, it doesnât surprise me at all. I think in this case it had a lot to do with him passing and she just decided she was going to meet him the same day.â
It’s a loss that hits hard for many in the community and statewide with the passing of former state representative Vic Stelly and fifteen hours later, his wife Terry.
