Mandatory kindergarten bill advances

Apr 21, 2021 12:54 PM The Senate Education votes 5-1 in favor of a bill that would make kindergarten mandatory in Louisiana. Baton Rouge Senator Cleo Fields’ bill would require all children to start school at the age of five. Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools Legal Director Sarah Vandergriff backs the legislation… “Any message the state can send to parents of the importance of early education is supported,” said Vandergriff. Homeschool Louisiana Government Affairs Jesse Leger spoke in opposition. She said five-year-olds should be outside playing, not limited to a classroom setting and this places another burden on families who homeschool. “We will have to report to the state two years earlier than we do now. It’s just another government overreach which we’re not super happy about,” said Leger.

Louisiana $15 minimum wage bill advances, but faces fierce head winds

Louisiana $15 minimum wage bill advances, but faces fierce head winds A bill to eventually raise Louisiana s minimum to $15 per hour cleared a Senate committee Wednesday, but the measure will face fierce resistance as the debate widens. The Senate Labor Committee reported Democratic New Orleans Sen. Troy Carter s bill favorably on a 3-2 vote, but Carter s previous efforts have stalled on the Senate floor, where Republicans hold a near super majority. If we give our people the opportunity to do better our communities will do better, Carter said when presenting his bill. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards supports the bill as he has supported previous efforts.
