bodies of the saldivar family, found wednesday in their white van that had been washed away in the flood. and at the reservoirs upstream in from houston, a controlled release is now happening at the addicks dam to ease water spilling out around the ends of the reservoir. a mandatory evacuation order was issued in some areas around the barker dam. we ll have more details on that throughout the morning. one more round of heavy rain taking a hard parting shot at port arthur and beaumont, texas on the louisiana border. we ve just learned the city of beaumont has lost its water supply after pumps failed in floodwaters. even official shelters where people had taken refuge started flooding. and now workers at the texas health care emergency operation center keeping a close eye on hospitals and nursing homes. patients at one nursing facility in port arthur evacuated yesterday as hallways flooded. and at least 16 hospitals in
suffering from some of the same problems that they are in beaumont. where we are in orange it s only just a few miles away from the louisiana border, and there is a dam in louisiana which they have been strategically opening flood gates to to release some of the pressure from some of those waterway bu waterways but that s led to some of the flooding here. this is flooding that this community has never seen before. people that we talked to that have lived here for 20 years or more have never seen the waters rise this high and this came after that second round of hurricane harvey, after it went off the coast and then came back on inland and just cut up through the southeast portion of texas and on the west side of louisiana. the flooding started around 1:00 yesterday morning and just kept coming and actually, i have dorsey here, who lives in this neighborhood right behind me, and you told me, you lived here for more than 17 years. you ve never seen anything like this, right? never in l
number of the rescues and evacuations have been happening. deteriorating conditions on the ground in texas. blake, what s the situation like where you are? we re near the louisiana border. this is part of the state that was hit with the third landfall, the last part of the state to get hit. and there s a lot of water on the ground. sun is out, water is going down, we re talking about three feet, four feet in some places. people can t get back to their homes. people who chose not to evacuate are getting nervous, even though water is not going up, they ve been stuck in their homes several days and are calling rescue crews to get them out. we have seen at least one military helicopter hover over an apartment complex, pull a half dozen people out of that complex. keep in mind in storms like this, we hear it all the time, people are told to have three days of food and water. this storm was so prolonged, lot of people are out of food and water, even if they prepared
right on the texas/louisiana border. and the rescue effort here is ongoing. many of these communities, water is as much as 4 feet up in some of these houses. and they really weren t expecting it. this is not a town that traditionally sees a lot of flooding. so we were in one neighborhood that s about a mile down the road from where we are right now. and i talked to a grandfather who said that the water started seeping in, at around 1:00 this morning, and he just did not expect it. he got his family up, he had several of his grandkids that were staying with him in the house. and they started the process of trying to evacuate. he had a jet ski, but that wasn t enough to get everybody out. but that wasn t much longer into the day that the cajun navy came through and there were boat after boat, going through these neighborhoods and getting people to safe. that continues tonight. there is a shopping center that s here behind me, that the market itself is actually closed right now, but they
