Hundreds more schools have been praised by parents in Greater Manchester for their efforts to help children during lockdown. Yesterday we revealed a list of more than 100 schools that mums, dads and grandparents said had gone above and beyond to support pupils and families.

Friday marks Louise Currie’s 101st birthday but due to the pandemic, she wasn’t able to celebrate with her family in person. Instead, her granddaughter sent along 101 birthday cards to mark the occasion. And as we found out it's all for a woman who still has an amazing spirit.

“There are more people presenting with alcohol issues than there would have been previously,” Currie, co-founder of MindSpace Counselling, says. “Some of these people would have had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol but they were somehow managing it. They were distracted with the gym, with friends, going out; whereas now, in lockdown, they’re in the house and alcohol consumption is increasing.”
Currie says people are drinking earlier in the day, every day and a couple who used to share one bottle of wine a night are now drinking two.
“The clients I work with would be what you’d term ‘functioning alcoholics’ people who still have jobs, people who appear on the outside to have it all together but now family members are noticing because they’re not able to disguise it as well,” she says.
Slaley Commemoration Hall. Village Halls Week 2021 will recognise the contribution England’s 10,000 plus halls have made to rural communities since the 1920s. The national campaign week - now in its fourth year – is set to take place between January 25 and 29 January and will feature online events, videos, podcasts, and blogs showcasing the history of village halls and the benefits they have derived for rural communities over the years. In Northumberland there will be a special online event for village hall reps to attend to find out more about the new Northumberland Village Halls Portal which is currently in the final stages of development.
