I rarely agree with Amanda Vanstone. However, I do agree wholeheartedly with her republican sentiments (âRoyal problems wonât help republicansâ, April 5) and the model she proposes. Like her, I prefer a mostly ceremonial head of state (like we currently have) with political decisions being made in the Parliament and not, potentially, at the whim of a popularly-elected narcissist. Unfortunately, the postface to the article identifies her as âa former minister of the Howard governmentâ. I canât recall her standing up to Howard when he scuttled the 1999 republic referendum by forcing those in favour of a republic to choose that model rather than having separate choices for a republic and the model to be adopted. -

âSydney needs world class green spaces not a new police force to monitor the communityâs use of long-established public parks,â Cr Byrne said.
