End of an era: Last timber bridge in Rockhampton Region upgraded
It’s the end of an era with the last timber road bridge in the Rockhampton region upgraded, thanks to funding from the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said it was great to see such an achievement as a result of Round 4 funding from the program.
“The last remaining timber bridge in the region, on Glenroy Road over Louisa Creek, saw the conclusion of an upgrade project more than 13 years in the making,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Mr Miller was now calling for a government review on fishing practices including fitting a camera to every gillnet fishing boat to protect threatened and endangered reef wildlife. Several turtles were allegedly trapped in a gillnet at Louisa Creek, Hay Point, near Mackay. The AMCS estimated the annual tally was closer to more than 1000 turtles. Six of the world s seven species of turtle are found on the Great Barrier Reef, Mr Miller said. All are listed as vulnerable or endangered under Australian law, which means they are all protected species and fishers must report if they have caught them.
