after the news broke while we were on the air last night here. north korea s latest provocation. the north launching its second ballistic missile over japanese airspace this time traveling the greatest distance yet. tonight administration officials saying they are giving sanctions a chance but adding the u.s. does have other plans at the ready. for those who have said and have been commenting about the lack of a military option, there is a military option. now it s not what we prefer to do. so what we have to do is call on all nations, call on everyone to do everything we can to address this global problem short of war. the u.n. security council calling an emergency session to address the north korean launch. back here at home next tonight to st. louis where demonstrators are gathering in the streets after the acquittal of a police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man. protesters starting to gather. right after the verdict was announced. extra police put on duty tonight. pr
happening on the street? well, don, i ve been in contact as you know i m from st. louis. this is my community, this is my hometown. so i ve been in contact with relatives and friends throughout the week as they were bracing for this verdict. so i ve been getting text messages all day as these protests were taking place. and i was hearing just what your reporters are saying which is essentially that these are very organized and very peaceful protests. but, look, this is a community that s very angry. this is happening on the heels of the michael brown shooting case and the whole ferguson incident is very fresh in the minds and in the hearts of people that live in st. louis, and they did not expect for a judge to find that this officer was not guilty. and more importantly, some of the comments that were made in his order. and i know your earlier program, some of your commentators talked about it, but that comment that the judge made about urban
mike shils is here. he s a cnn political commentator. mike, why would the justice department make this move given so many incidents we ve seen seeing across the country? well, look, i think that the trump administration did run on being a law enforcement or law and order administration, a law and order president. and i think that there are a great number of americans that are very, very concerned about how the police are being treated when they re watching people throw things at the police and the police are being attacked when you have nonpeaceful protests. and i m reflecting that s what the voters think. i think that it s obviously i much, much deeper issue than that and the unrest that s happening in st. louis and cities across the country as these trials move forward are something that i think we have to have a much larger national dialogue on and why people believe that they re being treated unfairly. but one of the responses to what you see is a backlash from many
near all of this that s going on. you would hope that his parent would get him home at this point because he s so young. ryan young on the streets of st. louis for us this evening. back now to anthony gray the attorney for the mother of anthony lamar smith the man shot by officer stockley. does the family have a message tonight for these protesters. you know miss annie smith gave that message earlier, a message of accountability. she also wanted everyone to remain safe. she put out a message ever peace and calm as well. so that s been her message from the very beginning. there was a full expectation, don, that you would have a public reaction in the fashion that we re witnessing right now. it was expected. i think the police should have been prepared for it, it sounds like they are prepared for it, given the amount of weapons and artillery being deployed at this
protesters on the treat in st. louis tonight, increasingly tense situation after judge acquitted police officer first degree murder of a shooting death of a black man. cnn s ryan young is on the streets of st. louis, what are you seeing? reporter: definitely tense. i want to show you this line, just about where that truck is if we walk closer you will feel the effects of the gas, got in our lungs. one of the other things we noticed is someone dropped this out of their bag this is what people are using out of their eyes and face to get that gas out. that s one of the things you can hear someone behind us, we ve had protesters talking towards police, the fact they were told they were going to be dispersed and kept running. now at this point you see a little bit of the protesters are left behind. few people decided to stay.
