South Sligo water issue needs sorting now

It s difficult not to feel great sympathy for the people of South Sligo who seem to be suffering more than most over the past while. As if the N17 wasn t bad enough to have to put up with - the speed limit on the main route from Galway to Sligo has been slapped with an 80kph zone in places. It s a clear recognition by the authorities, be it the Road Safety Authority or the County Council that it just isn t safe anymore. It has no hard shoulders and is full of hidden dips, bad bends and a poor enough surface despite the best efforts of the Council.

Tap water is yellow despite a €10m upgrade of plant

Concerned residents in South Sligo have been assured their water is safe to drink despite discolouration in recent weeks. Consumers in some areas on the Lough Talt Water Scheme have noticed a change in the colour of their water since the new €10million treatment became operational. Many have reported a yellow or brown tinge to their supply. However, in response to queries from Cllr Martin Connolly, who was contacted by residents in the area, Irish Water say they are aware of the issue and there is no danger to the safety of the drinking water. In a response issued to Cllr Connolly, a spokesperson said: “While the new plant is performing well we are aware that some consumers have observed occasional low colour events.”

Irish Water s constant battle to deal with the State s waste and thirst

As motivational messages go, the pictures on the wall at Irish Water’s Ringsend wastewater treatment plant are more taunting than encouraging. Water quality in Dublin Bay will be good enough for Blue Flag status, declares one over a vista of sparkling sea meeting azure sky. Dollymount, Sandymount and Merrion strands will meet all EU bathing standards, vows another. Dublin’s finest amenity, declares a third with a bird s-eye view of the plant itself. Within two years of the plant’s completion in 2005, it was overloaded. The beaches have often been subject to swimming bans, Merrion has officially been de-designated a bathing area and, around the bay, blue flags remain elusive.
