utterly devastating. i spoke to people on the platform very close to a station. thankfully it was going slowly. people saw exactly what happened. they heard a loud thud, screeching and then they saw the smoke and couldn t figure out why this bus had done this and what happened. as we said now six confirmed dead, but sadly, more than 30 injured right now. they re saying most of those people from the bus and 11, michael, still in critical condition. mike sfl. and paula, do you have any idea, i mean, why it was that the bus just kept going? do they understand? do people have any sense of the condition of the bus driver? it s hard to know. the rail crossing was down. there was a safety gate there. it was down. apparently the bus went right through it. if you try and understand why this driver went right through it, some people are speculating maybe he suffered a heart attack, maybe he was having a medical problem and that s why the bus failed to stop. no one knows at this point and
there s been a terrible accident to report to you that comes to us from canada. a passenger train there actually shearing off the front of a double-decker city bus in the capital city of ottawa. this happened this morning, and police say at least five people right now are confirmed to have been killed in this accident. cnn s paula newton is live on the scene. she joins us via telephone. paula, can you update on what just sounds like a tragedtraged reporter: it is a tragedy. people here still quite shaken, ashleigh. what happened was people were waiting on the platform to board a train that was bound for downtown ottawa to downtown toronto. they heard a loud thud, an incredibly loud screech, they said. you could hear the metal. and then plumes of black smoke. what seems to have happened is
calling for the suspect to get on the ground. they heard a loud thud and someone shouted fire in the hole and reporters were told to get as far as they could from the scene and one officer told a reporter, if you want to live, turn off your cell phone. this sounded like a very serious, threatening situation that you are in the middle of and that matches with what griff jenkins said, which was that he heard something loud, some kind of explosion around the time they were getting the suspect. reporter: quite possibly what griff jenkins heard and would be consistent with shouting fire in the hole would be a controlled explosion. one of the ways they get rid of a bomb is to blow it up. they will bring something i remember in israel and watched bombs get disposed of. they had a aren t with a shotgun shell attached and they would shoot the bomb, there are a number of ways to defuse a bomb. if they were able to shout something ahead of time, that
2:50 yesterday afternoon thereabouts. what are you doing? where are you? what evolved? aisle dead center at that point sitting right on the finish line. out there for about five hours shooting finish line scenes. at this point four hours into the race, mostly the charity runners and the people that didn t qualify coming across. i m trying to capture scenes. somebody does a cartwheel coming across the line or push-ups, that sort of thing, very light coverage, 2:50 p.m. out of the right side just there it went, the explosion just smoke shot up, you heard the loud thud sound and just kind of went over. got closer for a split second, thought is it some kind of muss kel fire celebrating these people coming across. as you got closer, only 12 seconds on the approach we heard the second explosion up by fairfield street. a, what goes through your mind, then your mind s eye as
the runners coming across the finish line as i usually do to put a compilation video together for the paper and for the website. for the morning. and just trying to find interesting characters doing cartwheels or push-ups at the finish line. when all of a sudden at 2:50, big loud thud, boom, flash of smoke went up. i thought it was a cannon salute to someone, but that didn t seem to make too much sense. didn t think i was rushing towards and explosion. just had to go over and check out what was going on. as we were getting a grasp of that situation, 12 seconds later the other bomb went off, up the street on fairfield and boyleston. and when i got closer to the railing where the first explosion went off and saw the sidewalk and the pool of blood and bodies lying around and a man with his leg severed at the knee, you knew this was a war zone situation. what s notable on the tape you re quick on your diagnosis,
