Alcohol Misuse Prevention in Maine?
Alcohol is the most widely misused substance in Maine by youth and adults. It remains one of our priorities to educate caregivers with the reasons not to provide alcohol to youth, to teach youth healthy alternatives for socialization and stress management, and to help the community understand how and why youth access to alcohol should be limited. When it comes to alcoholic drinks, the size and amount of alcohol included varies widely, and means that one glassful can equal several servings of alcohol. When deciding to only drink a certain number of drinks in an evening, you should know how many “drinks” are in your glass! One beer can is generally 5% alcohol – so one “drink” would be one 12 oz beer. One shot of liquor – 1.5 oz – is equal to one drink. One mixed drink, assuming it has just one shot of liquor, is also 1.5 oz of alcohol and is equal to one drink.

7 pandemic changes in Maine that are likely to stick around Contributed • February 21, 2021
By Emily Burnham, Bangor Daily News Staff
It is hard to quantify how much the pandemic has changed life for Mainers, and we probably won’t have a full understanding until well after it’s become a terrible memory. It’s hard to know what things we find ourselves doing now that we’ll keep doing once the pandemic is over.
Liquor license renewal denied
SOUTHWEST HARBOR All but one member of the Board of Selectmen signed a letter on Tuesday for the state’s Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations with reasons explaining why a liquor license renewal for Joey’s Place Sports Lounge was recently denied.
George Jellison stated he had found out more information since the board’s Jan. 12 meeting and couldn’t in good conscience put his signature on the letter. When asked if he wanted to revisit the subject or reconsider the board’s vote, Jellison said no.
“This liquor license, every year that I’ve been on the board, it’s been a repeat of issues,” said Selectman Chad Terry during the Jan. 12 meeting. “You can only be a habitual offender so many times.”

AUGUSTA Fourth-term State Representative Matt Harrington of Sanford has been appointed to join the 13-member Committee on Veterans & Legal Affairs.
Reached for comment this week, Representative Harrington was enthusiastic to bring his perspective to this high-profile legislative panel charged with reviewing proposals through public hearings and work sessions.
“I’m looking forward to joining this committee at an important time to make sure the needs of veterans are being met. No matter which branch they serve in or what war they fought in, the Maine State Legislature shares the responsibility we all have to support veterans and military families.”
