kelly cobiella is standing by. kelly, that news conference that just wrapped, what were we able to glean from that, if anything? reporter: a very brief news conference there, craig. we understand from police they have confirmed, as you mentioned, one dead, 32 injured. they did say the number of fatalities could rise, could likely rise. so that s what we ve gleaned from it just at this point, craig. we will listen in a little bit more and see if there s more pertinent information regarding the search for this one suspect. we know they are looking for at least one person. not clear on the status of that search or whether they are looking for someone else. there s been a lot of reporting in the very well-respected newspaper there in spain about this potential suspect, about possible items found in the van.
information as far as whether there may be additional fatalities at that restaurant or whether or not that situation has resolved itself and we have suspect or suspects in custody. this is a little bit fluid at this point and the information changes as it comes in. u.s. law enforcement is starting to get some sense or at least some briefing materials coming out of spain. we know we have a terrorist attack. we know we have at least one suspect and we know that there was some sort of an incident at a restaurant a little ways away from where this initially occurred and we know that there may have been a hostage-type situation involved. i know from spending a lot of time with the nypd, the boston police department, that when incidents like this happen before it was negotiate with the terrorists, try to talk with them and engage with them. that s kind of the old school way of thinking. the new way is you have to go in and stop the attack and get to the people right away because otherwise ho
case. but police are looking for at least one suspect, potentially the driver of this white van which ran into a crowd of pedestrians, tourists in the las ramblas district of barcelona at the plaza catalunya. it s flooded with tourists at this time of year. it happened at 5:15 local time in spain. you would have had a lot of people out there on the streets. there are witness reports of just complete chaos, of a loud metallic sound and then people crying and screaming. one witness reported hearing gunshots. we ve had no confirmation any sort of gunfight or shots fired in this, only this ramming of a crowd. from what we understand, this
standpoint of how diligent they were in manchester and in london and other smaller attacks in isis and al qaeda continued to call for them and every time they ve called to them, those calls to action have been heeded. so officials continually concerned about europe. they don t feel the same way that the threat is the same here in the united states because there s an awful big ocean in between. so that threat concern, as far as migrants coming to the u.s., isn t as high at this point but they are concerned about it in that part of the world and in europe. so these are one of the things that they ll continue to focus on and they ll continue to focus on the threats in that region. where this attack occurred, i ve been to on numerous occasions and it is exactly what isis has called for. a crowded area, a lot of people, very public area. and it appears that we ve had a terrorist attack. we don t know who is behind it or if it s been inspired, but we know that this is kind of it
