and also one of the architects behind obamacare, originally. we re also joined by stephen moore, cnn s senior economics analyst, former senior economic adviser to the trump campaign. gentlemen, i know we have a lot to say here. we ll speak one at a time. jonathan, you called this bill one of the purest redistributions from the poor to the rich in one bill we ve ever seen. explain. well, basically, the affordable care act tried to have a balance of financing mechanisms to try to allow the government to provide insurance for its lowest income citizens. what this bill does is keep in place most of the revenue cuts that were part of the affordable care act but reduce a major financing increase from the affordable care act, which is the tax increase on the wealthiest americans. and literally, what this bill does is cut health care spending focused on the lowest income americans about $600 billion over the next decade, mostly through a tax cut, 60% of which benefits people who earn more th
in health care right now. that s about 1.5 million gain over the past few years. wow. so, it s just a reminder that this sector of the economy is about a fifth of the economy, it amounts to 15.6 million jobs. and we know that some of the hospital systems and especially the university hospitals have been adding facilities, adding jobs, all kinds of different jobs, many of them well paid, because they have this new bunch of customers, paying customers who have health insurance. it will be really fascinating to see how that affects the tweaks and not tweaks, the big, big scalpel they re taking to health care in washington. medical associations, hospital associations, insurance associations are all concerned at a maximum, but at a minimum, they re watching closely what s happening. the aarp has been against this reform effort from the very beginning, actually, saying what this amounts to is a tax, an age tax on seniors. and a lot of women s groups are upset, because if you re tal
to start. they have been talking about this for at least seven weeks. and mark is right, it s a clean slate. they re going to start all over. pre-existing conditions i think is going to be the centerpiece of this, because that is a very important part of people s lives and part of their pocketbook, and they re going to be watching this with a lot of scrutiny because this is an important part of how they look at this bill. and dana bash, you know, mitch mcconnell explained to me the role he plays going forward and the difference between mitch mcconnell and paul ryan. look, up until yesterday afternoon, paul ryan was seen as a policy wonk who couldn t necessarily handle the inner workings of the politics of the house of representatives. maybe that changed yesterday afternoon. no one has ever accused mitch mcconnell of not being able to handle the politics of the senate. he is the ultimate sort of insider, meaning that he knows the inside game and he knows how
takeoff. all of these incidents are raising serious questions about customer service. many airlines have announced that they ve made various policy changes, everything from stopping this process of overbooking that is southwest increasing compensation. united airlines said they ll now offer some $10,000 for anyone who has to get on a different flight because the flight is overbooked. delta says they ll also increase compensation. all that being said, a lot of people are saying when they re seeing all of these incidents happening one after the other that it s simply just not enough. i can tell you right here in washington, d.c., a lot of lawmakers feel that it s just not enough. just this week, or last week, they had a hearing on this very issue, and i can tell you, here in washington they are considering what sort of legislation they can pass to protect consumers if the airlines aren t going to do it themselves. all right, rene marsh for us
