John Kobal Foundation/Getty Images(NEW YORK) Actress Anna May Wong will be the first Asian American to appear on U.S. currency, the U.S. Mint announced. Wong's coin, shipping Oct. 24, is the fifth design in the American Women Quarters Program, celebrating trailblazing women by placing their likeness on quarter dollar coins. This year, the U.S. Mint will release circulating quarters honoring Wong, along with poet and activist Maya Angelou; Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Cherokee Nation leader Wilma Mankiller; and suffragist Nina Otero-Warren. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson said Wong's new coin honors her as a "courageous advocate" who championed greater representation and more multi-dimensional roles for Asian American actors. "This quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of accomplishments by Anna May Wong, who overcame challenges and obstacles she faced during her lifetime," he said.
