with the usual. what is going on, ali? look, we started off the day this morning with a rough night in asia. european markets on news that, you know, the german economy, the strongest in europe has weakened to almost a stall, the french economy, absolutely no growth in the quarter. that took u.s. markets downright off the top. but before that, more than 12 hours ago, we got a report from morgan stanley to say what we ve all been saying, global economies are slowing down, that they were on the we re dangerously close to a recession, we may need more intervention in europe from the european central bank and more from the fed. and you know, you ve been talking about this, piers, that rick perry said that we can t have more intervention. in fact, if the fed were to intervene, it would be treasonous, it s that whole set-up, what are we going to do if things are really bad? we have no political agreement in this country. and add a few economic reports and i won t bore you with
aftershock, which is now out in paperback. ali, what happened today? a lot of things happened here. we had a situation where it s not just fear we ve been talking about. this was actual fact. we had we started this morning with with slow bad markets out of europe, then before the markets opened, we got this report from morgan stanley which talked about slow growth around the world telling us things we already knew. but they said we re on the precipice. they didn t say we were there, they didn t say it s the base case, but they said we re dangerously close. also cited errors in policymaking here in the united states and in europe. and they said it s likely that the european central bank and the fed would have to get further involved in this economy. now, you know all week we ve been talking about rick perry saying it would beo treasonous for the fed to get involved. it represents a view in america that the fed should do no more work in stimulating this economy. so now
he s going to unveil a jobs proposal that my sources tell me will have specifics in a way his critics have been calling for. so according to my sources it will be actual legislation. that is real detail. until the package will be new initiatives not a rehash of the policies we ve been hearing him promoting recently like patent reform or an infrastructure bank. my sources say there ll be proposals in three main categories, targeted tax cuts, another big one for the white house is new infrastructure investment, and then long-term help for the unemployed. i should point out this is all being worked out right now. it will continue to be hashed out over the president s vacation. the president is meeting with his top economic advisors tomorrow. i ll told it will come up there. already some republican leaders have issued warning shots saying this package should not include any new spending. the president says it will. sounds like we should brace for a fight. so david gather begin,
