Qatar International Baja: Entries open for new round of FIM series

 08 Mar 2021 - 10:02 The Peninsula Doha: Entries are now open and beginning to come in for the new Qatar International Baja, the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation’s (QMMF) exciting addition to the expanded 2021 FIM Bajas World Cup, taking place from April 8 - 10.  Motorcycle and quad riders and drivers of SSV vehicles can expect to face 504.24 competitive kilometres through the Qatar deserts in a compact route of 872.44km. Officials at the QMMF, working under the chairmanship of QMMF President Abdulrahman Al Mannai, Executive Director Amro Al Hamad and committee member Abdulrazaq Al Kuwari, have laid on a varied and challenging Baja that features sand dunes, fast sandy sections, testing navigation and the unique terrain associated with Qatar’s arid desert.

Meeke fastest in SS1 as desert battle begins  30 Jan 2021 - 11:05 Ireland’s Kris Meeke and his English navigator Sebastien Marshall during the ceremonial flag off of the 2021 Qatar International Rally at Katara yesterday. The Peninsula Doha: Northern Ireland’s Kris Meeke and his English navigator Sebastien Marshall finished the opening special stage of the 2021 Qatar International Rally with a 6.6-second advantage over local hero Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah at Katara, north of Doha, late yesterday.   Driving a Škoda Fabia R5 on the sealed surface stage, Meeke clocked a time of 4min 14.3sec. The 4.4km stage consisted of two runs and two laps of a purpose-built track. This followed immediately after the event’s pre-event press conference and a ceremonial start where 17 cars taking part in the FIA event and four entered in the Qatar National Rally were flagged away by senior QMMF officials.

Then, ahead of an impressive field of drivers and co-drivers from 12 nations are two days of high-speed competition across the northern deserts of the State of Qatar that will make the opening round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) such a challenge. Run under the rigorous protocols put in place for the COVID-19 pandemic, all necessary precautions have been taken. Teams have now completed their reconnaissance of the desert special stages and attention turns to setting the cars up in preparation for the rigours that lie ahead over the weekend.
