For seven games during their inaugural season in Central Massachusetts, the Worcester Red Sox will become ‘Los Wepas de Worcester” as part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión, an annual event that celebrates Hispanic and Latino heritage in baseball.
According to the Worcester Red Sox press release announcing their participation: “¡Wepa! is a Spanish expression of excited happiness.” It was suggested by Worcester resident Daniel Velazquez at a WooSox fan plan meeting. He’ll throw out the first pitch at Polar Park on June 6, the first of Los Wepas game to honor his contribution.
