Selena: The Seriespremiering on Netflix May 4, it tells the story of Selena’s rise to fame from a little girl with a big voice in Texas to a hugely popular, Grammy-winning singer of Tejano music.
But Selena didn’t do it alone. The Netflix series is a family drama, featuring her parents, Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla, and her siblings and bandmates, A.B. and Suzette. The show will also feature the other members of Selena y Los Dinos, including the guitarist who would become Selena’s husband, Chris Pérez. Based on the reviews, the show is truly an ensemble cast.
I’ve always had trouble waking up. My parents would take turns yelling my name, trying to get me up for school. (Since I was named after the Katherine Ross character from The Graduate, they often found this amusing. “Elaaaaaaine!”) One morning, after a few rounds of shouting my name and even turning on my bedroom light, my father came into my room and turned up the volume to my radio. It was Selena’s “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and I could hear it playing throughout the house.

THURSDAY on The Source Decades after her death, Tejano star Selena is still an icon. Her influence and lasting legacy has become almost mythic among communities that hold her most dear, especially in Texas.
Selena rose to stardom in the 90s and her tragic murder in 1995 shocked millions. She was inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame that same year.
At the time of her death, the singer had released 11 albums six with her band Selena y Los Dinos and five without and was Billboard s top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade. The outlet also named her the top female artist of Greatest of All Time Latin Artists in 2020.

While her familyâs got her back, Selenaâs hitting some new challenges in Part 2, between finding her voice as an artist and trying to make her relationship with musician Christopher (Jesse Posey) work despite certain objections. When she receives pushback on their romance, particularly from her father Abraham (Ricardo Chavira), Selena tells Chris in the trailer, âif youâre my husband, weâll be family, and heâll have to be okay.â
As the lead singer of Selena y Los Dinos, Selena is also faced with the prospect of going solo, which spreads the overworked performer thin. The acceptance of a fateful offer from fan Yolanda Saldivar (Natasha Perez) to help take on the burdens created by Selenaâs growing fame will steer the promising artist towards her tragic end.
