Ian Robertson, the travel writer, who has died in Arles aged 92, regarded swathes of continental Europe as his “Empire”; well he might, as thousands of appreciative connoisseurs travelled across Spain, Portugal, France, Cyprus, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland with his scholarly Blue Guides. Robertson wrote nine Blue Guides, injecting each with an engaging combination of acerbic wit, artistic detail and encyclopaedic knowledge.
