Tonight we are delighted to have derek beck presented the war before independence 1775. Derek has always had a passion for military history which inspired him to start his career in the u. S. Air force, he has served as an officer on active duty and science roles and in space operations. In 2005 he earned a master of science degree at m. I. T. Where he also fell in love with bostons revolutionary past. To more fully pursue writing, he later transitioned to the air force reserves, though he still remains quite active, presently holding the rank of major. Dereks first book igniting the American Revolution, 1773 to 1775 received an Honorable Mention here at the Fraunces Tavern museum book award in april. Dereks second book, the sequel, the war before independence and that was released in may. I would now like to welcome derek to the lectern. [ applause ] thank you all for coming. I have two books and they together tell the entire boston campaign. The first covers from the start of the war which i describe the start of the action at the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Then the first shots are fired and it ends with the siege of boston just beginning. It is kind of how book two starts. Both books are standalone, they can be read independently, but together they tell the entire boston campaign. Little bit more of who i am and the reason behind this book. We have been talking to guest speakers from different departments of our bureaucracy and the president of the Supreme Court justice, but i think the most important part of this week was to interact with our fellow delegates from the 50 states and washington dc and japan, south korea. The insurrection i have had with my fellow delegates, whether it is talking about politics or what we have for breakfast was probably the best part of this weekend. I would like to say my most memorable moment would be going to the white house and meeting the president , and the best part was just watching him come down the hallway because you always see that on television but to actually see it in person was pretty incredible. Brian lamb what did you notice in person that you do not see on television . He looked a little thinner. [laughter] than he does on television, but just to be in a president s presents no matter if you agree presence no matter if you agree with his policy or not, it is really incredible. He is tall. Is that to be simple for your life, or is it the symbol we see today in the political campaigns . We have not seen it today. There is a lot of bickering on both sides. People cannot seem to agree, but i think it is important to reach across the aisle and try to get, get to know people, not only those you are running against but anyone who has a different opinion than yours, because it is really important to challenge your perspective.
