School bus driver shortage: Susquehanna Valley companies scramble to fill positions

With about five weeks until school is back in session, some school bus companies are worried about having enough drivers. A shortage of bus drivers is a problem nationwide and in the Susquehanna Valley.Reliance Student Transportation provides bus services for four York County school districts.The company has 300 drivers on board but is still looking to recruit another 30 to 35 people. As we get closer to summer ending and the school year starting, we have a tendency for drivers to tell us they do not plan on returning, Lorie Bevens said.The company said some people are afraid of contracting COVID-19. Others are also afraid of driving a big bus and going through hours of training. At this time, we re not sure where we ll be when school s ready to start, Bevens said.If the company comes up short, other employees have been trained to fill in.Starting pay is about $19 per hour.The company allows the children of drivers to ride along with them so they won t have to pay for daycare
