On the men's side, guard Max Abmas earned the league's Newcomer of the Week award with his performance against Louisiana State. As part of The Halal Guys Showcase in Houston, Abmas led the Longhorns to a 96-85 win with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds in 35 minutes on the floor. He shot 6 of 13 from the field including a 4-for-9 performance from 3-point range.
Taylor Jones scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds and No. 5 Texas defeated Long Beach State 106-62 on Wednesday night to continue its undefeated start to the season. Rori Harmon scored 17 points and made six steals for the Longhorns (10-0). Backup guard Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half.
Harmon finished with a double-double, 27 points and 13 assists, while the freshman Booker poured in 20 points to help the Longhorns over 11th-ranked UConn. The Huskies were led by Aaliyah Edwards with 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting. Paige Bueckers, returning from a knee injury that kept her out all last year, had 13 points in 35 minutes of action.
Texas (7-0) held South Florida to single digits in the first three quarters to win the Reef Division after also beating Arizona State 84-42 and posting a 62-point win against High Point in earlier tournament games.
