Erin, this is a start to a project several years in the making. The existing bridge is more than 50 years old some say standing on borrowed time. There was a big turnout. Gov. Mccrory told the crowd they said it wouldnt happen. Its happening today. The new bridge is designed to have a 100year lifespan, expected to open in fall 2018. Instead of 1 navigational span, the 3. 5mile project will have 7 spans. Governor mccrory calls it a lifeline for hatteras island.
