Plans are afoot for the integrated development of Motupalli, a historic port in Chinnaganjam mandal of Prakasam district.
The tourism potential of the sleepy village, where the bronze idols of Lord Nataraja, his consort Parvati, their son Ganesha and Alwars, the Bhakti movement saints dating back to the 12th century, were found in the 1970s, has remained hitherto untapped.
It is interesting to note that coins and pottery from the 9th century Chinese Ming dynasty were also found during the excavations conducted in 1972.
Seized Lord Nataraja idol
MADURAI: The Bodi Town police in Theni district seized an idol of Lord Nataraja that is suspected to be an antique piece and arrested a 26-year-old man from SS Puram in Bodi.
A police team led by Bodi Town inspector Saravanan conducted a vehicle check-up on Saturday. The idol was found in a car that was stopped by the police during the check. It was wrapped in a gunny bag and measured three feet tall and weighed around 10 kgs.
The team immediately picked up M Manikandan, 26, who was the driver.
Inspector Saravanan said, “Manikandan stated that he was paid by a few men to keep the idol with him for a while. He was told that a man would approach him shortly to pick up the idol.”
