The level of support for independence in Wales is similar to that in Scotland s a decade ago, Plaid Cymru s leader has claimed.
Adam Price told the BBC s Andrew Marr Show more and more people were supporting the idea because of the state of the economy and the level of inequality in Welsh society.
Mr Price said independence would put Wales on a better path .
But Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas said a referendum now would not be wise .
Mr Price said: We are not going to be able to put Wales on a better path, on a better trajectory, without independence.

A £2.25m rescue package to protect jobs at the National Library of Wales has been announced by the Welsh Government.
President Meri Huws welcomed the money, saying it would allow it to address the recommendations of a review.
An extra £3.95m will go to National Museum Wales, Amgueddfa Cymru. The money will be provided over the current and next financial years.
The Welsh Government has faced criticism for failing to increase its grant funding for the library, including an accusation from one senior source at the institution that ministers failed to recognise the importance of our cultural institutions .
THE Welsh Government has announced a new funding package for the National Library of Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. The package includes £6.2m over financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22, providing the Library with £2.25m and the Museum with £3.95m to safeguard jobs and deliver new strategic priorities. The funding for the Library also includes £750,000 to accelerate the implementation of the findings of the recent Tailored Review. Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas said: “I am pleased to announce this funding which will safeguard and support two of our most important cultural institutions during this very challenging period. We have been in continuous contact with the Library and with Amgueddfa Cymru for quite some time, and are taking steps to protect jobs and to ensure the sustainability of these bodies, who are responsible for caring for our national collections on behalf of the people of Wales.
