BBC and HBO’s
His Dark Materials is building to something big, with last week’s episode finally seeing Will come into possession of the Subtle Knife. Now, we’re seeing him put it to the test in a high-stakes episode that also delved into sexism, the line between science and faith, and what happens when someone finds the grass is greener on the other side of the multiverse.
Lyra Must Be Protected in His Dark Materials Episode 2.06 Promo
With only two episodes left,
His Dark Materials Season 2 has almost reached its climax. The latest installment saw Lyra break into Lord Boreal’s house together with Will. The young protagonists were on a mission to retrieve the alethiometer. Once there, they met Mrs. Coulter, who attempted to convince Lyra to go back with her. But the negotiations didn’t go as Mrs. Coulter hoped, and the result was a clash between Pan and Coulter’s daemon. Taking advantage of the confusion, Will and Lyra took the alethiometer and escaped to Cittàgazze thanks to the Subtle Knife.
season 2, episode 5, “The Scholar.”
We need to check in on Will. So much has happened to him this season on
His Dark Materials: He traveled to an alternate dimension, made enemies in that dimension, befriended a girl from yet another dimension, lost two fingers, and became the bearer of The Subtle Knife. Now, he’s embarking on a journey to find the father that abandoned him. Even if I hadn’t read the books, I would have a sense of dread about what’s going to happen to this li’l cinnamon roll next.
In “The Scholar,” Will and Lyra execute a heist to steal the alethiometer back from Lord Boreal, but unexpectedly run into Mrs. Coulter herself. He learned how to master cutting between worlds about as quickly as Lyra mastered reading the alethiometer in season 1, but like any good “chosen” hero, has doubts about whether or not he’s worthy of this quest. While Mrs. Coulter and Will did not have much time to talk, he saw the affect the woman has on his friend.

Having crossed over from the world where the Magisterium controls all, Mrs. Coulter comes face to face with everything she could have had in a different world in this week s episode of
His Dark Materials. She sits in Lord Boreal’s car observing the people around her. As Boreal returns to bring her coffee, he gives her a rundown of this new world where a culture of consumerism and not faith rules. While he’s disgusted by that fact, Coulter realizes over the course of the episode that there is a freedom here she never experienced in her own world.
