The public protector has directed the Hawks to investigate allegations that Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane received R450,000 to renovate his house from R1m allocated for the memorial service of the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
The R450,000 used for the renovation of Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane's home three years ago came from funds siphoned from the bank account of the Mbizana municipality.

Eastern Cape Premier and ANC provincial chairperson Oscar Mabuyane and party treasurer Babalo Madikizela could find themselves under investigation by the Hawks following a damning report by Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane that the two had fraudulently and improperly benefitted by R1.1m meant for the late Winnie Madikizela’s memorial service which was held by Mbizana Local Municipality (MLM) in 2018.
