My job is assistant director for history and culture at the Smithsonians National museum of the American Indian. I lead the scholars, the historians and curators at the museum who are in charge of producing the exhibitions, and the books and a lot of the Educational Programs and symposiums and work with a collection of about 824,000 objects, but i have a real interest in photography, and we have also 500,000 photographs in the National Museums Archive Center and ive been working very hard in the year that ive been at this museum. I have a 30year career at the smithsonian and i just joined the museum in the last year and these photographs are of much interest to me at the Archive Center. And i came to love the smithsonian, so when i had a chance about a dozen years ago to become a regent of the smithsonian, i jumped at the opportunity. I got to meet somebody then who was then building the africanAmerican History museum. He started with nothing to build that museum and now made into one of the most popular museums in the entire country. President obama i am so proud of lonnie bunche. Johns church, and i am thrilled that our friends at the White House Historical association asked us to provide space for tonights conversation. Stewart asked if i would share a little bit of a history of this historic room that you are sitting in tonight, and so i will share with you this church was completed in 1816. The architect was Benjamin Henri vitro, and not only did he designs church, he was working on rebuilding the white house after it was destroyed by the british in the war of 18. 12 in 1818, he built what is now the home of the historical association. And if you go inside the dictator house, and you look up, you see a similar entrance. Its almost like a miniature of this dome of we have in our church space.
