Sarasota County to preserve 1,490 acres of land east of Myakka River State Park
SARASOTA COUNTY Sarasota County commissioners have agreed to purchase a conservation easement on two large properties just east of Myakka River State Park.
The combined $3.4 million easement purchase will protect the natural integrity of 1,490 acres just off State Road 72 by precluding any future development.
While the county has eyed the properties for nearly a decade, previous preservation efforts were thwarted due to a considerable amount of nuisance exotic vegetation, agricultural impacts and a lack of natural resources.
In recent years, Laurence and Carol Hall, fifth-generation Floridians and land stewards, have worked to restore the native habitat and hydrology on the properties.
