National Grid is celebrating the start of tunnelling for its £1bn flagship project to rewire and replace existing electricity cables in London.
The arrival of a tunnel boring machine (TBM), named
Edith, at National Grid’s New Cross site marks a significant milestone for the London Power Tunnels (LPT) scheme which will futureproof the Capital’s electricity supply.
The 140t TBM will help to construct 32.5km of tunnels up to 4m in diameter under the streets of South London, between Wimbledon and Crayford.
Work began in spring 2020 and is being delivered by a Hochtief Murphy joint venture.
The project is the second phase of the LPT scheme. The first phase was a seven-year programme which involved the construction of 32km of tunnels and two new substations in North London.
