Changes made to Effingham Co. MLK celebration for safety By Sam Bauman | January 18, 2021 at 5:22 PM EST - Updated January 18 at 6:22 PM
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Like many communities, Effingham County was forced to change their plans for this yearâs celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Although it looked different, the message of Dr. King was stronger than ever.
There was no parade through downtown Springfield. No crowds lining the sidewalks. Instead, cars sitting in a field.
âWell, it looks different due to the pandemic.â

The usual breakfast, parade and evening service in Springfield to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day will not be held due to the coronavirus. But a drive-up celebration will be held at noon Monday at the county fairgrounds.
Participants will remain in their vehicles and masks and social distancing will be required, according to the Rev. Lon Harden, the pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Guyton and the chairman of the MLK Jr. Day Committee.
Although there will not be a parade, the Rev. Dr. Leo G. Burns, the pastor of the Union Springs Methodist Church in Clyo, will be honored as the 2021 grand marshal.
