of police officers. as anne makovec reports, this comes at a dangerous time for the city. isn t that right, anne. reporter: that is right. the murder rate in san jose is on pace to be the highest in 30 years. a lot of that is gang crime and with 70 officers turning in their badges today, we have heard from both police officers and the mayor saying people have reason to be concerned. it is very difficult. it s a dark day in the history of san jose pd. reporter: a dark day that even with contract concessions and months of negotiations could not be avoided. the last day on the city s payroll for 70 officers in san jose. anytime that you dilute personnel in the field, response times could go up and we re going to do everything we can to avoid that but it s a realistic possibility. reporter: it amounts to about 6% of the force off the streets today. sad day to see officers turning in their badges. unfortunately, we don t have enough money to pay them all. reporter: m
up call for a community that prides itself on peace. we have several guns found in a space of three monthses would wary some to worrisome to us. reporter: a committee of parents and educators have been banging out a plan to address the problem for months. they will proposed to the school board tonight. adding four new security officers at berkeley high for a total of 16 requiring students to carry their identification cards at all times. educating students about the dangers of gun and closing all four entrances. the district rejected a plan to install metal detectors. this is a high school, not a prison facility. reporter: students we spoke to like the changes. at least people won t trespass. reporter: the district says their vigilance is already paying off. since march not a single gun incident has been reported. we are a great school. reporter: students hope the changes will keep it that way. board members expected to approve some form of that proposal at
