standard. so you re watching the president today. in a few minutes, he s going to be back with those baltic state leaders from lithuania, latvia and astonia. interesting time, too, with what s going on with russia and him getting tougher on that. right now this harder stance on immigration, what do you make of it? i think there are several reasons why this is back in the news. there s the caravan going through mexico, which apparently has been stopped. also, this new budget deal. any time you get a bipartisan budget compromise, there s a strong bias toward the status quo, which means the president didn t get the money he need for the wall. that really brought it back in the news. got a lot of complaints from immigration hawks. but we re basically stuff at the same place where we were back in february. it seems like they were closer than imagined a year ago, with president trump said he would compromise and grant amnesty, even citizenship, to 1.8 million illegal immigrants who came h
on a two-day visit to mexico city, the seventh round of nafta talks. talk to me. yeah. i was harris, i was real encouraged by what i saw. look, what they re putting together is the nuts and bolts of a very good trade agreement where u.s., frankly, does better. mexico and canada do as well. by putting our strengths together, frankly, together we can compete and win against china, europe, anyone else in the world. what i also saw was a commitment from mexico and canada and the u.s. to finishing out a new modern nafta this year. i think talks what i saw was very encouraging. i think this next round of talks is really going to be crucial. harris: let me step in real quickly before i let you go. do we have mexico s attention? no doubt. harris: yeah? do you think we can get them to pay for part of the wall? well, that i don t know, but i do know this. with the modern nafta in place
i like a president, while he s pushing congress and others to rethink how we act, he s demanding that we act. i think that s right. harris: without a deadline, congress, i just don t know what you can get the democrats to come on board with with this issue. i want to move on. president trump is also threatening to blow up nafta. i don t know if you caught that tweet. many talked about it moments ago. just days before the u.s., mexico and canada are set to resume those high level negotiation. the president is sounding off on nafta at the white house. let s watch that together. i told mexico, look. you have a cash cow in nafta. nafta has been great for mexico. has not been good for the united states. lot of businesses have closed down because of nafta. you look at empty plants all over the place. and this is from years ago. they still haven t recovered. nafta s been a terrible deal for the united states. we re renegotiating the deal right now. but it will still be good for mexico and
after leaning heavily on mexico to do something about this caravan that has been heading through mexico. a caravan heading for the u.s. border. the president does seem to have gotten some action out of mexico. listen to what he said just a short time ago. i just noticed that the caravan now, which is toward the middle of mexico, coming up from honduras is breaking up very rapidly. that s because mexico has very strong immigration laws, as we should have. we should have those laws. we don t. we have immigration laws that are laughed at by everybody. reporter: the president leaned heavily on mexico, even warning them that nafta could be on the table if they didn t do something about it. the president does seem to have gotten some satisfaction. it would appear he s gotteden some satisfaction in the early going from mexico on this caravan of migrants. what s going on at the
amnesty more difficult than they are now. the real thought that if some of these central american migrants got to the united states they would claim amnesty saying they would be persecuted if they would return to honduras, which would allow them to stay in the united states. it would also end protections for children who are arriving without parents, unaccompanied minors. and allow families to be detained longer while their cases are adjudicated. aga again, the department of justice wants to speed up those adjudications. the president putting a quota on this, saying, kwoerbt as ridiculous as it sounds, the laws of our country do not easily allow us to send those crossing our southern border back to where they came from. a whole procedure must take place. mexico and canada have tough immigration laws, where ours is an obama joke. act congress. the president did tphrbg that lunch meeting, harris, surprise the pentagon a little bit when he said until a wall is built,
