Happy Monday and welcome to the final week of 2020! I know a lot of you are ready for this crazy year to be over and for fresh beginnings in 2021.
We here at Your Local Weather Authority have been busy this year, tracking numerous heavy rain (1″ or more) events that have impacted Southwest and Central Virginia.
There were 23 such days in Lynchburg, 20 in Roanoke and 19 in Blacksburg and Danville. Those numbers rank second in recorded weather history for all four climate sites.
The tropics had a big impact on how wet this year was. You may remember Hurricane Eta, the remnants of which soaked us around Veterans Day. That system resulted in the wettest days of the year in Lynchburg, Danville and Blacksburg.

ROANOKE, Va. – We’ve been talking about it all week and our holiday cold front is set to arrive today. We’re under a laundry list of alerts over the next 48 hours, including flash flood watches, potential severe weather and winter weather advisories.

The radar is already lit up in holiday green with rain beginning this morning. Look for the showers to stay scattered in nature until midday.

Happy Monday! We here at Your Local Weather Authority truly enjoy telling you about all the happenings in the night sky. You probably already know about the “Christmas star,” which we’ve talked about in great detail. In case you missed it, Chris Michaels has a great write-up on how rare this is and what exactly is happening during the “Great Conjunction of 2020.”
I’m going to use the space of this newsletter to tell you about another celestial event: the Ursid meteor shower. If you haven’t heard of it, that’s not surprising as it is a relatively new phenomenon. While many meteor showers like the Geminids and Perseids have been viewed for centuries, the Ursids were first documented in the 1900s.

Your Local Weather Authority has been tracking this storm for days. As we get closer to the storm’s arrival, there’s one thing that remains tricky in the forecast. That is the temperature above the surface. That will determine where snow cuts off and where the wintry mix begins. Regardless, an impactful and significant winter storm is likely in parts of our area Wednesday due to snow and ice.

Happy Monday! The talk of the town this week is our upcoming winter storm. A good portion of our viewing area has already been placed under a winter storm watch on Wednesday. We have a pretty good handle on how we think things will go with this system in our daily forecast article, written by Your Local Weather Authority meteorologist Chris Michaels.
