VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - As the weather steadily gets warmer, John Mannino has hope. I think it s going to be a good summer, said the chef and owner of Mannino s Italian Bistro before adding, Hopefully.
Mannino and his business partners opened Mannino s Oceanfront location on Atlantic Avenue six years ago. He also owns a Mannino s location on Princess Anne Road and Fish and Slips on the harbor in Portsmouth.
Just as it did for so many restaurants, the COVID-19 pandemic did a number on Mannino s businesses, but the Virginia Beach resort area was especially hit hard.

HAMPTON, Va. - Brews, booze, good eats and good music.
The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery on King St. in Downtown Hampton has worn a lot of hats since opening in March of 2018.
This weekend it ll celebrate its third anniversary in style with a free concert on March 6 starting at 7 p.m. featuring the music of Anthony Rosano.
The 1,170 capacity space has been struggling since the outbreak of COVID-19 a year ago, says Randy Thomas, The Vanguard s President. If we were just a restaurant and music venue, I would not have survived, but the fact that we make beer and liquor, it allowed us to continue manufacturing and sell to other places that were opening back up, he said.

HAMPTON, Va. - Our theme is being blessed and highly-flavored.
That s what Lakesha Brown-Renfro and her staff are running with as they get set for the grand opening of Charlotte s Cafeteria in Hampton s Phoebus neighborhood next week.
You can find that theme in everything from the southern comfort food menu to the bright decor to the service out in the community.

The Charlotte s menu features homemade southern comfort food like baked spaghetti. We re just out there not just serving good food but serving up laughs as well, said Brown-Renfro.
