Speaking to journalists at Phulo Jhano Chowk, Marandi said: “The way minerals are being indiscriminately mined by the mafias across Santhal Paraná, nothing will be left for the coming generations.” “The administrative machinery is not acting against illegal mining, indicating that there is patronage from the ruling dispensation. The mafias are running amok by paying a monthly ‘goonda tax’,” Marandi added. The former minister alleged that the mafias instigate the locals to mount violent attacks on officers even if they try to curb these practices.

Ranchi: Opposition BJP on Saturday charged chief minister Hemant Soren with shying away from a CBI probe in connection with the alleged suicide of Rupa Tirkey, then officer-in-charge of Sahibganj women police station early this month and said it would move the court if needed to ensure justice to the bereaved family. Ruling JMM, however, dismissed the charge and said the government is ready for a probe by any agency if the family members made a formal demand. Addressing a press conference at the party office here, BJP leader Babulal Marandi also accused Soren’s political aide in Sahibganj of engaging in all kinds of “illegal acts” in the Santhal Pargana region and police have remained a mute spectator.

The protesters, who submitted a memorandum to the local administration, said the dust emanating from the quarries are a health hazard, causing tuberculosis and other diseases, and also destroys their crops. The protesters also demanded the administration to sprinkle water on the main road as scores of trucks ferrying stone from the quarries increase pollution.
